While batsmen pulling away from playing the shot is common in a game of cricket, it is extremely rare to see an umpire not being ready when everyone else is. Today, James Neesham’s six was of no use as the umpire called the Mustafizur Rahman delivery a dead-ball as he was not prepared for it.

James Neesham has been a star on the social media thanks to his witty replies that more often than not tickles fans’ funny bones. On the cricket field, too, he has always been extremely cool under pressure and with a smile on his face, he lets his bat do the talking. “The master of sarcasm”, however, had to deal with a joke when the umpire called the first ball of the 43rd over a dead-ball.

Neesham was all set to take the team to a good total. With Bangladesh clearly struggling to insert themselves in the game, they resorted to Mustafizur Rahman in the death over in a hope to get some wickets and restrict the run-flow. The umpire, however, was not prepared for it.

Mustafizur streamed in nonetheless, without the understanding that the umpire was not aware of his bowling, and bowled a short ball to Neesham. As soon as the ball released from his hands, the umpire signalled it as a dead ball, but the Kiwi batsman had momentum in his side as he launched the ball over mid-wicket boundary for a six.

The fielder attempted to take the catch, but the ball was so flat in the air that it went like, what Ravi Shastri would call a “tracer bullet”. Neesham then immediately went towards the umpire to check why it was declared a dead ball to confirm it. During that time, Ross Taylor was mic'd up on the sidelines of the ground to have a conversation with commentator Mark Richardson and instantly uttered "Nice Shot". Richardson, however, corrected it by saying it was a dead ball and the shot counted for nothing.
