While the fielding standard of this Australian team is not close to world-class, every now and then, their players are capable enough to pull off something remarkable. Yesterday, it was Jason Behrendorff’s turn to showcase one as he recovered from the dive in 0.927 seconds to run Rishabh Pant out.

It was a game that was largely Australia’s until the moment Jasprit Bumrah turned the table and made India the favourites to win the game. Nevermind what happened in the last over, making Umesh Yadav the national “villain”. However, the honours of the evening for a spectacular show went to Behrendorff.

On the last ball of the 10th over, D’Arcy Short’s ball stopped on its way and seeing the slowness of the surface, Pant decided to come down the track and wanted to cut it past cover. However, it took a top-edge of the bat and was never on its way to the boundary. The lanky pacer was stationed at cover and saw a perfect opportunity to dive dramatically to his right and stopped it from going further.

While many would have faced the problem of collecting it in the first place, Behrendorff was quick to recover from it as well as he took just 0.927 seconds to return the throw from the same position to Peter Handscomb. The debutant wicket-keeper saw that Pant was a long way down and there was no way he could have made it back to the crease. In the process, Handscomb took the bails off without much fuss to signal the end of Pant’s innings.
