It is almost impossible for someone to believe that a no ball signal from the umpire can save a batsman from getting run-out in a competitive game of cricket. But, that actually happened in a BBL match where Perth’s William Bosisto remained unbeaten at the end of a game because of a no ball.

Perth Scorchers were chasing a target of 147 runs against Melbourne Stars at the MCG. They got off to a great start and were clear favourites to win the battle against the Stars after Cameron Bancroft (59) and Michael Klinger (29) stitched together a brilliant opening wicket stand of 75 runs. After Klinger was dismissed, the Perth side did not take their foot off the pedal and Ashton Turner's quick-fire 43 off just 22 balls put them in complete control of the match.

However, Dwayne Bravo’s two wickets in two balls in the 17th over made things slightly interesting but the visitors needed just 11 off 20 balls. Liam Plunkett was handed the ball in the 18th over but the Englishman gave away nine runs in four balls to end the Stars' hope for a win.

But the drama was not yet done. On what would turn out to be the last ball of the match, Plunkett banged the ball short and it went over the head of Bosisto and into the hands of Seb Gotch. The wicketkeeper decided to have a shy at the stumps and was able to inflict a direct hit. However, Bosisto had been able to make his crease before the bails were dislodged. On realizing that he could end the game with a run, the Scorchers' all rounder decided to go for the run. Seeing this, Gotch ran upto the stumps, picked the ball and uprooted the wickets to complete the run out.

As he turned around to appeal, he saw that the umpire was signalling a no ball as Plunkett had already delivered a short ball on the third ball of the over. Replays suggested that the square-leg umpire had called that a no ball almost instantly, the game was over before the ball was called dead. The visitors managed to win it by six wickets and Bosisto remained not out for two even after the freak incident of a run-out.
