Umpiring is a part of T20s and a single blunder by the on-field official can prove costly for any team. Michael Klinger learnt that in a hard way after Steve O'Keeffe got a catch at third man off the seventh delivery off Ben Dwarshuis’ over, but umpire missed to notice that and declared him out.
Perth Scorchers didn’t have to break a lot of sweat in order to secure a win over Sydney Sixers - an opposition against whom they have a great record in the history of Big Bash League - but the game was not bereft of controversy. This time, however, it stemmed because of the umpire’s inability to count the number of balls in the over.
In the second over of the Scorchers’ run-chase, Dwarshuis had already bowled six legal deliveries, but the umpire didn’t notice. Dwarshuis then went ahead to bowl the next delivery, which stayed short and wide of off and Klinger easily rode on the bounce and cut it in the air towards third man, where O'Keeffe was stationed.
It was a simple catch for the man from New South Wales who easily grabbed the catch, but wasn’t sure whether he safely took the catch or not. The on-field umpire referred that to the third umpire, who after checking the replays, ruled Klinder out. However, no one picked up the fact that Dwarshuis had already bowled six legal deliveries and the last delivery on which O’Keefe took the catch was not a legal delivery.
It all came to the notice when Channel 7 showed the footage that he had bowled 7 deliveries in the over.
