Sourav Ganguly has asserted that Rohit Sharma has turned into a phenomenal player in the last three years in his column for TOI. Sharma played an impressive knock of 133 off 129 deliveries in the first ODI against Australia but the visitors slumped to a 34-run loss and trail the home team by a 1-0.

The Indian cricket team, under the leadership of Ravi Shastri, fell to a 34-run defeat at the hands of Australia in the first ODI at the Sydney Cricket Ground, despite a valiant effort from opener Rohit Sharma. The Indian batsman scored 133 from 129 deliveries in the second innings before he was dismissed by Marcus Stoinis. However, Sharma’s knock against Australia impressed former India captain Sourav Ganguly.

"From three wickets down for four runs, India did well to get past 250. One has to talk about Rohit Sharma’s innings. He has become a phenomenal player, especially over the last three years, in the shorter format and is right up there with the best. What stood out in that innings was despite wickets tumbling at the other end, his strike rate remained exceptional," Ganguly wrote in his column for The Times of India.

India looked sluggish in their chase as they found themselves in a precarious situation with three wickets down with just four runs on the board. Ganguly suggested that a lack of warm-up fixtures ahead of the limited-overs leg of the tour cost India the game in Sydney.

"A lot of the Indian batsmen, other than Rohit, Virat Kohli and Shikhar Dhawan, went into the one-day international series without any warm-up matches, so it is quite understandable that they will take a little bit of time to get into that mode.

"I’m sure we will see amimproved performance from India in Adelaide...There are still two games to go and they will have a chance to make it 2-1. They have been in this situation many times before, where they have come back and won the series despite trailing," the Kolkata-born cricketer added.

The ongoing tour has proved to be a historic one for India as they secured their first ever Test series win Down Under. Despite the Australians putting up a meek effort in the longest format of the game, Ganguly opined that the hosts’ looked much better heading into the limited-overs series.

"They are looking like a good team in this format; they are currently in the rebuilding phase, a cycle which every great team goes through, but this one-day side looks more settled and better than the Test team. Once David Warner and Steve Smith are back, they have the potential to be a very strong side," Ganguly concluded.
