Mohammed Shami’s transition from Test cricket to ODI cricket was complete in this series as he managed to set up few batsmen intelligently. However, he found himself embarrassed after he failed to understand which side he should throw the ball today after his collision with Nathan Lyon.

Mohammed Shami is not canny like Jasprit Bumrah, nor does he deceive the batsmen like Bhuvneshwar Kumar. However, there is a sense of novelty to his bowling which is very much fresh and that is his ability to be a “no holds barred” bowler - strangely anachronistic at a time where setting the batsman up and the extra dependence on the moving ball is the order of the day.

Among all the good things he does, it is also a fact worth remembering that Shami is also fragile. While he panicked after being hit for a couple of boundaries, let’s keep the discussion regarding his control of that odd spell for another day. But what about fielding? Well, it has always been his kryptonite and he doesn’t give any excuse for that.

One such incident occurred in the 49th over of the innings, in which Shami bowled a yorker on the middle and Lyon dug it back down the pitch. Given it was the fag end of the innings, he started running without the understanding of where the ball was.

After realising that there was a run-out opportunity, Shami reached the ball when Lyon was crossing him. The duo inevitably collided as Shami too a blow to the head and Lyon found him struggling to stay on his feet in the middle of the pitch. Shami, who had already collected the ball, had a great chance to have a shy at the stumps at the non-striker end as Lyon was still trying to find his feet. Instead, the Bengal pacer got carried away with the momentum and threw it at the striker’s end where Jhye Richardson had already landed his bat. Brainfade in the land of the Aussies? Maybe.
