While MS Dhoni has made running between the wickets fashionable by storming in at times and walking for some, he today failed to complete a single today which couldn’t find umpire’s attention. Dhoni ran for a single and even before reaching the other side, he returned back as the over ended.

While umpiring mistakes are part and parcel of the game, seeing if a batsman is completing the run properly or not, has to be one of the most important things for the umpires to take notice. However, now a days, the umpires seem more interested to be reliant on technology for everything and MS Dhoni took the benefit of the same.

The incident in question took place in the 45th over of the innings when Nathan Lyon bowled a tossed up delivery to Dhoni and the Indian wicket-keeper gently pushed the ball towards long-on. He started running for a single and given it was the last ball of the over, the umpire was more interested to hand over the cap to Lyon. 

As Lyon took his cap and started walking back to his fielding position, Dhoni also returned back to the middle of the pitch to discuss the next over strategy with Karthik, without realising that he hadn’t completed his single. However, no one was aware of it as it smoothly slipped everyone’s mind.

Recently, a similar incident had cost Sri Lanka five penalty runs in a Test against England at Pallekele. The official rule (18.5.1) reads, "If either umpire considers that one or both batsmen deliberately ran short at that umpire's end, the umpire concerned shall, when the ball is dead, call and signal Short run and inform the other umpire of what has occurred and apply 18.5.2."
