Washington Sundar is optimistic that his hard work over the last few years will bear fruit as he received a call-up for the three-match T20I series against West Indies. Washington is one of four spinners in the squad alongside Ravindra Jadeja, Krunal Pandya and MI youngster - Rahul Chahar.

The Indian cricket team will hope to bounce back as they head to West Indies after a disappointing end to their World Cup campaign as they exited the tournament in a loss against New Zealand in the semi-final. While many senior players have been given some much-needed rest after a tough WC outing, the Indian selection committee have given an opportunity to various youngsters to prove themselves in the senior squad.

One of them is 19-year-old Washington Sundar, who has been a mainstay figure in the India 'A' team over the last two years. The RCB spinner revealed that he is confident that his hard work will definitely pay off in the near future as he aims to secure a permanent berth in the national team.

"It is an amazing opportunity to be playing for India at such a young age. But the moment I think about the competition and start expecting too much, it makes things harder. I just have to focus on the present and work on my skills in practice every day. I put in a lot of hard work and effort in every session. I strongly believe that my hard work is going to pay off going ahead.

"There has been a lot to learn in the last couple of years. And the more I play, the more I am going to learn. My execution of skills and game awareness to handle different situations has improved," Washington told TOI in a recent interview.

Sundar, who played seven T20Is and one One-dayer for the senior Indian team, is a consistent figure in the India 'A' team in the last two years. The youngster opened up about his struggle with the ankle injury he suffered during the England series last year.

"I had an ankle twist on my right leg on the eve of the T20 series in England last year. That particular phase was definitely hard, but it has helped me mentally. It was my first major injury. I was too desperate to make a comeback. But the injury took its own time. I returned after a couple of months and went to Australia in November (for three T20s). But the injury recurred. After that, I realised there is no point in rushing back," he added.
