ICC World Cup 2019 | Jason Roy pulls up hamstring against West Indies, a cause for concern for England
Jason Roy has apparently suffered yet another injury as he pulled up a hamstring in an attempt to chase a ball while fielding against the West Indies. The player, clearly in pain, was immediately replaced with a substitute fielder, with the possibility that the injury might be serious.
In an unfortunate incident at the Rose Bowl, Jason Roy reaggravated his left hamstring injury while chasing a ball that was rushing to the boundary. The event occurred as early as the eighth over of the first innings when Roy turned around from his position at point to sprint towards the ball, only to end up hobbling to the ground while holding his left hamstring having run less than two metres.Â
Eoin Morgan immediately approached the distressed player and after a grave discussion, he instantly called for Roy’s replacement which sent the message that the injury might not be a mere niggle. This is definitely not the first time Roy has suffered from injuries, having had back spasms and head injuries earlier this year, apart from also pulling up the same hamstring which seems to have been damaged today while playing against the same opposition in a series in February.
England have released a statement that the opener is feeling a “tightness in the left hamstring” and the status of his injury is “currently being assessed.” The Surrey player has been in remarkable form, having scored a sturdy half century in the tournament opener against the Proteas only to follow it up with a magnificent 153 against Bangladesh.
"People in general, talk about scoring hundreds. He's an exception to the rule. He just goes on and get big scores. The rate he can get them at is so difficult to defend. He scores all the way around the ground, he takes really good bowlers down, he hits good balls for boundaries. He's great to have in the side,” skipper Morgan had earlier said of the player.
Jonny Bairstow has opened the innings for England along with Joe Root who usually comes in at number three, leaving regular opener Roy on the sidelines and doubtful of any further participation in the match, as they chase a modest target of 213.
