Former Australian batsman Michael Hussey has stated that India have enough depth to cover for Shikhar Dhawan, who has been ruled out of the tournament due to a fractured thumb. Dhawan has been one of the pillars of strength and has been replaced by an explosive batsman Rishabh Pant.

Dhawan’s ouster from the World Cup is indubitably a massive loss for the high on the confidence Indian side as he has been a prolific run-scorer at the top. His performance in big tournaments has further been staggering and has done extremely well to get consistent starts.

Michael Hussey claims that India have enough depth in their squad to cover up for the southpaw’s absence. India have roped in Rishabh Pant as his replacement whose exclusion from the 15-man World Cup squad initially raised a lot of eyebrows.

“I do think it’s a big loss but I don’t think it will derail India’s campaign. I think they have got enough depth to cover Shikhar Dhawan,” Hussey said, reported ESPNCricinfo.

KL Rahul did well in the only game where he opened the batting against Pakistan and is expected to continue to take guard at the top alongside Rohit Sharma. Pant was in scorching form in the recently-concluded Indian Premier League and will be interesting to see if he replicates his magical performance on the big stage as well.

“I still think they have got enough talent in their squad to feel that they can go all the way in this tournament,” Hussey added.

India are currently placed fourth on the points table and are scheduled to play Afghanistan in their next fixture on Saturday.
