In any competitive cricket match, we usually see the wicketkeeper going for an appeal if he spots the ball going even close past the bat. However, in a World Cup game between South Africa and New Zealand, Quinton de Kock didn’t even appeal after Kane Williamson had nicked the ball from Imran Tahir.
Williamson looked in full-flow during the run-chase against South Africa on Thursday’s World Cup encounter at Edgbaston. Chasing 242 to win in 49 overs, the Kiwis were off to a poor start as they had lost the wicket of Colin Munro (9) in the third over of the innings. However, it was a match-winning unbeaten hundred from the skipper that ensured the Kiwis chasing the total down in the last over of the match. But, the New Zealander had survived a scare in his innings of 106 when he had nicked a delivery of Tahir.
It was the last ball of the 38th over of the innings and of the last over of Tahir’s spell. The leggie had a good outing yesterday but was wicketless in the match. The Kiwis were in dire straits at the moment with the scorecard reading 173/5 and Williamson was the set batsman in the middle and was batting on 76. Tahir’s delivery turned away from the right-hander sharply and landed in the gloves of the wicketkeeper.
Although Tahir was seen going up for an appeal, he didn’t get any support from his teammates, not even de Kock, who was behind the stumps. The Ultra Edge showed a spike as the Kiwi skipper had under-edged the ball into the wicketkeeper’s gloves on that occasion. Williamson was lucky to get away with that and South Africa lost a golden chance of turning things around in the rain-truncated affair on Wednesday.
