It seems that lady luck has run out on Vijay Shankar when he comes out to bat in ODIs. After Ambati Rayudu ran him out in his first opportunity as an ODI batsman when he was in his 40s, today, a Virat Kohli drive was so hard that Shankar couldn’t track back and was run out by Adam Zampa.

After India suffered an early collapse in Hamilton, Shankar played an innings of such authority that left everyone and their pet dog surprised. However, to his frustration, a mistake by Ambati Rayudu proved costly for him as he was run out for no fault of him and was denied a well-deserved half-century. Today, the same incident repeated once again in Nagpur as he had to take a long walk back to the pavilion for no fault of his.

On the penultimate delivery of the 29th over, Zampa bowled a flighted delivery on the stumps and as soon as it dipped, the Indian skipper crunched the drive back at Zampa with fierce hands. It was a classic case of punishing the bowler with their own medicine, but Zampa had the day scribed on his name.

He bent down instantly and got a finger on the ball before allowing it to crash into the stumps. Shankar, who was at the non-striker’s end, had just left the wicket and seeing Zampa touching the ball at the perfect time, tried backing up, but he had very little time to react and get back in. Just before he could floor himself and position his bat inside the crease, the stumps had already been lit up. Virat Kohli was not happy by that and his expression said it all that how much he rued for playing that shot.

For confirmation, the umpire went upstairs and found out that Shankar’s bat was outside of the non-striker’s crease when the ball had hit the stumps. He instantly signalled him out to bring an unfortunate end to Shankar’s promising innings.
