Chennai Super Kings have been dealt a huge blow three days before their season opener against Royal Challengers Bangalore as South African pacer Lungi Ngidi was ruled out due to a side strain. Ngidi had an impressive IPL last year where he picked up 11 wickets in just 7 matches for the Champions.

Chennai will begin their title defence this year by welcoming Royal Challengers Bangalore at the MA Chidambaram stadium on March 23. However, one player who they will not be able to welcome back will be Ngidi who has picked up a “Grade II muscle strain” while representing South Africa against Sri Lanka in Newlands.

"Lungi felt discomfort while bowling during the last ODI against Sri Lanka at Newlands and immediately stopped bowling. Further scans revealed a Grade II muscle strain which will need up to four weeks of rest followed by a rehab programme leading up to the World Cup," South African Cricket Manager Mohammed Moosajee revealed, reported Sportstar.

Ngidi, who made his IPL debut last season, played a part in the Chennai-based franchise’s record-equalling third title. In the seven games that the South African played for the MS Dhoni-led side, he was able to pick up 11 wickets at an incredible average and strike rate of 14.18 and 14.18 respectively.

Chennai have not announced a replacement for the pacer yet.
