Sunil Gavaskar has stated that the Mumbai Indians-Delhi Capitals encounter at the Wankhede Stadium will be as strong as the India - Pakistan rivalry at a domestic level. He has also opined that the odds will be in favour of the home team with Rohit Sharma calling the shots at the top.

The third match of this season’s Indian Premier League will see Rohit Sharma’s Mumbai Indians take on the Delhi Capitals on March 24 at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. Former Mumbai cricketer Sunil Gavaskar, in his column for TOI, spoke in detail about the rivalry between the two cities of Mumbai and Delhi. The former India cricketer revealed that, at one point, the tension between both teams used to equal that of an India - Pakistan cricket match. However, Gavaskar spoke about how things have changed in domestic cricket over the recent years.

"For some strange reason, cricket followers believe that the Mumbai-Delhi cricket rivalry is as strong as the India-Pakistan one. But just as a reduced number of matches between the two countries has diluted the rivalry, the vast differences between Mumbai and Delhi has reduced it to just another game. Of course in the IPL, with franchises having players from all over, the rivalry is mostly between players and not the teams," Gavaskar wrote in his column for TOI.

Shreyas Iyer, a mumbai cricketer, will reprise his role as captain of the Delhi Capitals side while Sharma will lead his team once more as Mumbai aim for glory this year. Gavaskar opined that the home team will definitely be favourites in this match for one sole reason - Rohit Sharma.

"Both Mumbai and Delhi will try to begin their campaign on a winning note. Mumbai have won the trophy every alternate year since 2013 and will be fancying their chances. They have bid smartly at the auction and with Rohit Sharma opening the batting they will be hard to stop.

"They have been slow starters over the years which is what they will try and change this year. Delhi have hardly come within sniffing distance of the trophy over the last years and unless things change dramatically they could be clutching at straws once again," Gavaskar added.
