Kumar Sangakkara to become first non-British President of MCC
Kumar Sangakkara is set to become the first ever non-British President of Marylebone Cricket Club and his term will start from October 1 this year. He has closely been involved with the club as he had become its Honorary Life Member and had also joined its World Cricket Committee in 2012.
Former Sri Lanka captain Kumar Sangakkara has been announced as the President of the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) and will take up his one-year post from October 1, 2019 to September 30, 2020. He has been closely related to the club and even delivered the memorable MCC Spirit of Cricket Cowdrey Lecture way back in 2011, followed by an Honorary Life Membership and a place in the World Cricket Committee, of which he is still a part of. The legendary player, who has the highest 12,400 and 14,234 runs for his nation in both Tests and ODIs respectively, was delighted with this honour.
"It is a huge honour to be named the next President of MCC and it is a role that I am thoroughly looking forward to," he said, reported Cricbuzz.
The club is the custodian of the laws of the game and owns the Lord's cricket ground. Thereby, the 41-year-old’s tenure will oversee two England Tests against West Indies and Pakistan and the launch of The Hundred competition.
"For me, MCC is the greatest cricket club in the world, with its global reach and continued progress for cricket on and off the pitch. The year 2020 is going to be yet another significant one in cricket, especially at Lord's, and I am thrilled that I am going to be able to play a part in supporting its future as President of MCC," Sangakkara signed off.
