Stephen Fleming has stated that notwithstanding the result, Chennai Super Kings never lacked in their effort and praised his side for taking the game to the last ball. Fleming also added that there is a lot of work that needs to be done on CSK after MS Dhoni returns to India from the World Cup.
Chennai Super Kings, for all the talks surrounding the core being at the final stages of their existence and lacking the intensity that other teams have at their disposal, played their part to perfection and reached the final. While the season can not be termed as a convincing one, majorly because they had to scrape through in many of their games and won almost on the edge, reaching the final is still a huge accomplishment. Fleming wants to take that positivity with him and stated that the team never lacked in their effort.
âThis year in Chennai was tough (turning track), the conditions were tough to read, hard to play. A little bit of training as well, our batters werenât big enough from the form point of view. If we look at the aggregate of numbers from our top order, we could have liked a bit more. Batting certainly was a weak part of our game this season, there is a lot of work to do,â Fleming said following the one-run loss to Mumbai, reported Scroll.
âBut at the same time, how much more do you need? We got to the final, we went till the last ball. Of course, we didnât have a good season with the bat. But there was never a lack of effort,â the former Kiwi skipper added.
When the 2018 auctions ended, there were surprises aplenty and a lot more sniggers after CSK assembled what looked like a team for one season. Most of the players were above 30 years in age, and even though they managed to guide the team to the title last season and to the final this season, they must look at the rebuilding phase. Fleming hinted that the team will carefully approach that once Dhoni returns to India after the World Cup campaign.
âWe will give some time for dust to settle down. I think if you win one title and reach the final next time, you have had good two years. We do understand that we are an ageing team. So at some point, we just have to look at recreating the side, obviously MS as well.
âHe (Dhoni) will be travelling to the World Cup. A lot of talent has been established in other teams. You need to do it carefully and get the balance right, when you try to go for players who you think can deliver for us.â
