Ravindra Jadeja has stated that there is nothing to worry about the batting unit after just one failure in the encounter between India and New Zealand on Saturday’s warm-up match. The Indian team was skittled out for 179 runs in 39.2 overs after opting to bat first on a green wicket.

India last played an ODI on March 13 in the home series against Australia. The entire squad is coming on the back of a long Indian Premier League season and it was natural that they would take time to get back at their best. The first warm-up match against New Zealand did not turn out to be a good outing for India as Ravindra Jadeja was the lone batsman to score fifty. The team was dismissed for 179 runs but Jadeja ensured that there is no worry in the camp.

“This is our first game, it is just one game and we can’t judge players on one bad innings, one bad match. So nothing to worry as a batting unit,” he said at the post-match press conference, reported PTI.

The pitches are expected to play flat throughout the World Cup but the Indian side were in for a surprise at The Oval as the wicket was covered with grass, as pointed out by Jadeja,

“It is always difficult in England, you are coming from India, where you play on flat wickets, we still have time to work on it. There is nothing to worry, we just have to keep playing good cricket,” he reckoned.

“It was typical English conditions, wicket was soft initially but it got better as the game progressed. We are hoping that we don’t get this much amount of grass and get a better wicket to bat in the World Cup,” added the 30-year-old.

The top three of the Indian batting line-up Rohit Sharma, Shikhar Dhawan and Virat Kohli have played a lot of games in England and have also performed exceptionally well in the Champions Trophy in 2017 and 2013. With MS Dhoni too in the middle order, there is no dearth of experience. Jadeja reiterated that there is nothing to worry.

“As a batting unit we will work harder on our batting skills, everyone has a lot of experience, so nothing to worry.” he said.

Jadeja came to bat in the 20th over when the side was reeling at 81 for six. Even Dhoni was dismissed three overs later and thereby, the Saurashtra all-rounder got off the mark only in his eight delivery. However, he switched gears in the 30th over, to race from 16 off 26 to a run-a-ball 31 and was eventually dismissed for 54 off 50.

“I was telling myself that my shot selection should not be faulty. There was no rush. There were many over left. So I was taking my time,” signed off the 30-year-old.
