Former England captain Michael Atherton feels that Gary Kirsten is the suitable candidate to be appointed as the head coach of the English national cricket team. The post has been vacated after Trevor Bayliss resigned following the Ashes which saw Australia retain the urn with a 2-2 draw.

After a historic ICC World Cup triumph, the ‘Three Lions’ were unable to win the Ashes, with the 5-match series ending 2-2. Their coach Trevor Bayliss's successful tenure came to an end post the Test series, leaving the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) to search for a new candidate.

Former skipper Michael Atherton feels that Gary Kirsten is the best person to take charge of the English side.

"It's dangerous to fall into the trap of thinking a foreign accent makes you a better candidate, but no English coach has such an impressive CV as Kirsten's," said Atherton as reported by Reuters.

Gary Kirsten has been the coach of the Indian cricket team before, having led them to an ICC World Cup win back in 2011. He followed it up with guiding South Africa to the top of the ICC Test rankings the following year. Atherton feels that Kirsten would fit into the scheme of things in England.

“He (Kirsten) would make a fine choice. There are those who will frown upon another overseas appointment... I’m not of that number,” added Atherton.
