In the first ever draft of the ECB's inaugural edition of 'The Hundred' on Thursday, Ben Stokes was snapped up by Leeds-based franchise Northern Superchargers ahead of Joe Root. While Jofra Archer was roped in by Southern Brave, pacers James Anderson and Stuart Broad were not picked.

Leeds-based franchise Northern Superchargers opted to pick Headingley hero Ben Stokes ahead of Joe Root for their franchise, as the latter was roped in by the Nottingham-based franchise Trent Rockets. Geographical constraints meant that Stokes was eligible to play for only Northern Superchargers, who could pick only Yorkshire and Durham players and when coach Darren Lehmann opted to pick the all-rounder ahead of Root and Jonny Bairstow, the latter two were picked by Trent Rockets and Welsh Fire respectively.

"Obviously I have been associated with Yorkshire and that part of the world for a long period of time, it'll always be home to me," Root told BBC Sport.

"But I have big connections with Nottingham too - my dad played there as a Colt and in the junior teams and second team and I've always loved playing there too.

"It's a great venue to be involved in - the wicket there is fantastic, there are nice, small boundaries so it's come together nicely in many ways," he added.

Southampton-based franchise Southern Brave picked the trio of Jofra Archer, Chris Jordan, and James Vince, while London-based franchise Oval Invincibles acquired the services of Sam Curran, Tom Curran, Jason Roy. Moeen Ali and Chris Woakes, both of who played for the Birmingham Bears in the T20 Blast, were snapped up by their home franchise Birmingham Phoenix. Skipper Eoin Morgan was picked by London Spirit along with opener Rory Burns, while Jos Buttler, along with Saqib Mahmood and Matt Parkinson, was picked by Manchester Originals.

However, in a surprising move, England's pace aces James Anderson and Stuart Broad were both unpicked, raising a few eyebrows in the process. The remaining places in the 15-man squad will be filled up by a full draft on October 20, with the likes of Chris Gayle, Andre Russell and Steve Smith having enrolled their names in the draft.
