Bangladesh skipper Shakib Al Hasan didn't hesitate to express his unwillingness of leading the team after they faced 224-run defeat against Afghanistan in the recently concluded one-off Test match. The all-rounder has revealed that it's ideal for him as a player if he didn't have to be captain.
Shakib, who turned out to be the lone warrior for Bangladesh in their World Cup campaign and fared brilliantly when he wasn't the captain, has expressed that the Test leadership is hampering his performance as an individual. "I think it will be ideal if I did not have to be the captain. From a personal point of view, it will be good for my cricket. If I have to take leadership, then we must have a discussion about a lot of issues," ESPN Cricinfo quoted Shakib as saying.
Chasing a target of 398, the play was resumed with Bangladesh at 136/6 on the final day of the Test, and Shakib was the first to get dismissed and he took the blame for the loss upon himself. "I am really disappointed. We had four wickets in hand to bat out an hour and ten minutes.
"My first-ball dismissal made it difficult for the team. The responsibility lies with me. I think it would have been better had I not played that cut shot," Shakib said."It put the team under pressure. I should have taken up the job to spend more time at the crease, which would have made the dressing room more comfortable. Maybe we could have taken it close to a draw," he added.
Despite the fifth day of the match being hampered by rain, Afghanistan managed to bowl the hosts out with four overs to spare. Bangladesh was bundled out for 173 runs on the fifth day of the match as Afghanistan registered their second Test win in just their third Test match.
