Reports | Indian woman cricketer approached for match-fixing
A member of the Indian women’s cricket team was allegedly approached to fix matches ahead of the limited-overs home series against England in February. Ajit Singh Shekhawat, head of BCCI’s Anti-Corruption Unit, has confirmed that the unit has lodged an FIR against two individuals on the matter.
Throughout the last two decades, men’s cricket has been through some shameful moments with match-fixing scandals surfacing for all the world to see. Several well-established names of the game have had to live the rest of their lives tainted with the mark of disgrace for their deals under the table and well away from the field. But an allegation of the same sort in women’s cricket is indeed an unprecedented development.Â
The alleged incident, which took place earlier this year, has prompted the ACU to lodge an FIR against two individuals on Monday. ACU chief Shekhawat also confirmed that the International Cricket Council (ICC) has launched an inquiry into the matter.
"She is India cricketer and an international cricketer so the ICC conducted an inquiry into it. The ICC warned the person who made the approach and informed us and acknowledged that the cricketer has done the right thing by reporting the approach," Shekhawat told PTI.
The ACU’s first-information report (FIR) has been registered with the Bengaluru police against Rakesh Bafna and Jitendra Kothari.
