Split captaincy between Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli to relieve workload, suggests Yuvraj Singh
Veteran batsman Yuvraj Singh feels that with the number of formats increasing, it's important to relieve some workload off captain Virat Kohli. As it has been seen that Kohli's deputy Rohit Sharma has shown great promise as a captain, Yuvraj believes it's time to implement split captaincy.
Since the conclusion of the ICC World Cup 2019, there have been rumours that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) might introduce split-captaincy in the Indian cricket team and that Rohit Sharma might be named the captain of limited-overs. In fact, there was a widespread opinion that Sharma is a better ODI captain than Kohli, especially during the 12th edition of the IPL, when Rohit Sharma's Mumbai Indians became champions once again.
Moreover, in the broader view, Yuvraj has acknowledged that with an increased number of games across three full-fledged formats these days, the workload on a single captain might be too heavy.
"Earlier there were only two formats so it was easy for a captain to manage. Now there are three formats, if the load on Virat is more than maybe they should try somebody else for the shorter formats. Rohit has been very successful," Yuvraj was quoted as saying.
With the 2020 and 2021 T20 World Cups coming up, all teams have switched to the T20 mode and Yuvraj believes it's the right time for the board to consider this change.Â
"I don't really know. They have to decide how much workload Virat can take. Do they need to try somebody else for T20? It completely depends on how they want to go for the future. Virat has been the best batsman. How to manage his workload? It is completely team management's call," Yuvraj added.
