Billiards World Championship | Sourav Kothari loses final to Peter Gilchrist
Indian cueist Sourav Kothariās campaign at the World Billiards Championship came to an end as with the runners-up title as he was beaten by Peter Gilchrist in the summit clash. The Indian had got the better of Mike Russell and compatriot Pankaj Advani in the earlier rounds of the global event.
Singaporeās Peter Gilchrist became the new World Billiards Champion as he managed to beat Sourav Kothari in a long-up format which continued for five hours in Melbourne. The Singaporean won the final by 1307-967 to claim the title after a gap of six long years. He had managed to win the title back in 2013 when he had beaten Englandās David Causier.
Kothari had made a great start in the finale as he had a good 300-plus lead at the end of the first session with a brilliant 279 break which was followed by 89. However, Gilchrist came back in the final as Kothari made some unforced errors and the margin was reduced to only 100.Ā
Kothariās break of 253 in the second session was also not enough for the Indian to take a sizeable lead in the final. Gilchrist managed to take a 949-917 lead after a 313 break. Gilchrist was good in the last one hour or so and managed to get the better of the Indian at the end and clinched the world title.Ā
