After failing to make it to the top four in their first appearance in the ISL, the team from Jamshedpur will try to turn their fortunes this time around. They have a new head coach in Cesar Ferrando who replaced Steve Coppell as the latter chose ATK for the fifth season of the league.

The team from the mineral-rich state of Jharkhand started off on a positive note in 2017 and was in the race of the semifinals for the most part of the season. With 7 wins and 26 points from 18 league games, Jamshedpur missed the bus for the semifinals by four points after finishing fifth. There are six new Indian entrants in the team while they also have roped in five foreign footballers. Former Real Madrid manager Ferrando has taken over the charge and he must be having some serious plans for the club for this season. The Jamshedpur boys will start their campaign from October 2 against Mumbai City FC.

Ā Defence

Jamshedpur FC goal is in safe hands with Indian internationals Subrata Paul and Subhasish Roy Chowdhury along with young Rafique Ali. Subhasish was roped in from Kerala Blasters FC so that both Subhasish and Subrata can complement each other and exchange among themselves in a long season of ISL. Subhasish had earlier won the ISL trophy with ATK in the inaugural edition of the tournament.

Skipper Tiri is the mainstay of the Jamshedpur defence and the left flank will be guarded by the Spaniard, who effected 119 clearances and 37 tackles last season. But apart from him, there is a complete change in the line-up with four new Indian defenders joining the club from other ISL sides. They have brought in Sanjay Balmuchu and Dhanachandra Singh from Chennaiyin FC, Raju Gaikwad from Mumbai City FC, and Pratik Chowdhury from Delhi Dynamos. It is to be seen how the players coordinate among themselves and how the coach will handle them at the back. Robin Gurung, Yumnam Raju and Karan Amin have retained their place in the squad for the upcoming season.

Midfield

The inclusion of Tim Cahill is the biggest thing to happen for Jamshedpur FC as he will take charge of the new look midfield of the team. The former Everton player is expected to combine well with Brazilian midfielder Memo. The team has also roped in Spanish midfielders Sergio Cidoncha, Mario Arques in the central midfield, Carlos Calvo in the attacking midfield and Pablo Morgado in the right wing and the Spanish coach will want to extract good commitments from them.

Soosairaj Michael from Chennaiyin FC along with Vishal Das, Mobashir Rahman and Amarjit Singh are the Indian midfielders added to the side this year. Soosairaj's experience with the defending champions will come in handy for Jamshedpur who already have the services of Bikash Jairu from the previous season. Jairu contributed with one goal and one assist in their first ISL season. They also have the services of Jerry Mawihmingthanga in theĀ  left wing this season. Ferrando has preferred 4-4-2 formation and the role of the players in the midfield will be of greater importance in the upcoming season.

Ā Attack

The forward line mostly includes the players those who represented the club in the previous edition of the league.Ā  Sumeet Passi and Farukh Choudhary will take up the duties of finishing things up right at the mouth of theĀ opposition goal. Passi and Farukh were a part of the Indian side in the recently-concluded SAFF Cup and will try to carry on complementing each other in the Jamshedpur side as well.

Gourav Mukhi has been promoted to the senior team after some consistent performances for the reserve side of the Jamshedpur franchise but he is likely to miss out from the starting XI for almost all the games but will get to learn a lot being a part of the top league.

Strength and weaknesses

The flanks for Jamshedpur are strengthened with some good Indian players like Jerry Mawihmingthanga, Bikash Jairu and Michael Soosairaj along with foreign recruits Sergio Cidoncha and Carlos Calvo. They can be a threat to any other defence line-up in this season of the ISL. Goalkeeping is another strong point for them with two of India's finest custodians Subrata Paul and Subhasish Roy Chowdhury in the squad.

Whereas, their forward line might be a cause of concern for Ferrando as there is no big name and both Passi and Farukh had nothing to show in the previous season of the league. Farukh played 15 matches last season without a single goal and assist and same was the case with Passi who played only two games.Ā
