Former Indian Super League champions ATK pipped Mohammedan Sporting by a solitary goal in a rain-interrupted match in the 129th Durand Cup at the Salt Lake Stadium in Kolkata on Friday. The result helped 16-time champions, Mohun Bagan, seal their semi-final berth from the same group.

ATK registered their first win in the Durand Cup football tournament, courtesy an early goal from Hitesh Sharma. After heavy downpour resulted in a thirty-minute delay in proceedings, Sharma set the pace with his second-minute goal. Only three minutes later, Mohammedan had a chance to level things up, but Vanlalbiaa Chhangte’s shot hit the crossbar and went out. In the 47th minute, ATK goalkeeper Avilash Paul denied Mohammedan twice in a minute. Mohammedan squandered a golden opportunity in the 78th minute when Firoj Ali blasted his shot high over the crossbar.

Despite the win, ATK will bow out from the tournament with only four points from three matches in Group B. However, with a match in hand, Mohun Bagan, who lead group B table with six points, have qualified for the semis. Their last group fixture is against Indian Navy on Saturday.

In group D, Chennaiyin FC was leading 1-0 against I-League debutant TRAU FC when the match was called off due to heavy lightning and thundershowers in the 15th minute. N Joysana Singh gave Chennaiyin the lead in the eighth minute, converting from a measured pass from the right by RC Aimol.
