Former Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge has been banned from playing football for two weeks and fined £75,000 after being found guilty of breaching betting rules. The 29-year-old was released by the Reds at the end of last season and is currently a free agent, looking for a brand new home.
English striker Daniel Sturridge has been banned by an independent regulatory commission from playing football for the next two weeks. The BBC has reported that the former Liverpool man was faced with 11 charges, with nine of those dismissed by the regulatory commission.
The charge levied against the former Chelsea and Manchester City striker was breaching betting rules when he instructed his brother Leon to bet on a possible move to Sevilla in 2018. Sturridge was originally given a six-week ban and fined £75,000, but four of those six weeks have been suspended, with the forward free to play again on the 31st of July.
The report further adds that the English FA disagree with the findings and will be appealing against that decision, even releasing a statement saying as such. “The FA respectfully disagrees with the regulatory commission's findings and will be appealing against the charges which were dismissed and the sanction which was imposed,” the statement said.
At the moment, Sturridge is without a club having being released by Liverpool after spending six years with the Reds. He finished his career at Anfield making 160 appearances, netting 68 goals and won just the one trophy in the 2018/19 Champions League crown.
