Braces from Soni Munda (15’, 85) and Basanti Lakra (23’, 58’) against Arunachal Pradesh ensured that Jharkhand end up as winners in the Sub-junior Girls’ NFC tournament at Barabati Stadium, Cuttack. Jharkhand had made it to the final of the Junior Girls’ NFC in Kolhapur but lost to Himachal Pradesh.

Jharkhand won the Sub Junior Girls’ National Football Championship at the Barabati Stadium in Cuttack on Thursday after they beat Arunachal Pradesh. Braces from Soni Munda (15’, 85,) and Basanti Lakra (23’, 58’) helped Jharkhand waltz to their first National Football Championship victory this season.

Jharkhand took only 15 minutes to break the deadlock as forward Soni Munda made the perfect run in between the two Arunachal centrebacks and was played into the box before she placed it past the opposition keeper and into the net. The Jharkhand youngsters doubled their lead through Basanti Lakra who tapped into the empty net as keeper Bumpasai Manyu collided with one of the attackers.

The Jharkhand defence was at their very best as they easily nullified that Arunachal attacking duo of Simran Zeeba and Tallo Ana. The highest scorer of the tournament, Tallo Ana, was heavily marked which was to Arunachal’s dismay. After Lakra tripled the lead earlier, Soni Munda scored her brace when she slipped the ball past the Arunachal keeper to make it four with a few minutes of regulation time left. Earlier this year, the state had also made it to the Final of the Junior Girls’ NFC in Kolhapur where they lost to Himachal Pradesh.
