Christian Eriksen not good enough to play at highest level, asserts Lothar Matthaus

Lothar Matthaus has admitted that Christian Eriksen is not good enough to play for either Tottenham or Bayern Munich. The Danish star finished last season as one of the best creators in Europe but has struggled to find the same vein of form this season with Spurs also struggling to make an impact.

Tottenham’s biggest problem during the summer window just happened to be Christian Eriksen and his transfer saga. The Danish midfielder reportedly refused two contract extensions offered to him by the club with the second one reportedly set to make him the highest-paid player at the club. But reports indicated that Eriksen rejected both deals and the Danish international even went on to reveal that he wanted to leave in the summer.

But no move materialized and now with the Dane running down his contract at Spurs after failing to agree to a summer exit, the likes of Real Madrid, Juventus, Manchester United, and even Bayern Munich have all been linked with a move. However, Bayern legend Lothar Matthaus has admitted that he’s unconvinced by the Dane’s talent and his performances this year further questions if he’s good enough to play at the highest level.

"I've been following the player for a long time and so far in 2019 he has disappointed me. A transfer to Bayern wouldn't make sense in my view, and would be very surprising. If he's not enough for Tottenham, he's not good enough for Bayern. Club president Uli Hoeness has also said before that Bayern doesn't need any substitutes," he told Sport 1.

The Danish international has struggled to put his best foot forward this season despite finishing last season as arguably one of the best playmakers in the world. That form and his ability to create something out of nothing for Tottenham was one of the many reasons Spurs even reached the Champions League final. Yet despite that Matthaus went on to add that while Eriksen is a typical number 10, he would never manager Niko Kovac’s style of play.

"Eriksen is a fine technician, a typical No.10, but he's too slow, and Niko Kovac likes fast players. For me, Eriksen is not the kind of player who makes the difference at the highest level, so concentrate on the transfer of Kai Havertz next summer, and you still have Philippe Coutinho, who plays well as a ten. Do not forget Muller, who can play any position offensively and should not give up. I repeat: Eriksen makes no sense to me,” concluded the German legend.
