Women's Hockey World Cup | India holds England to 1-1 draw

With an incredible performance, Indian Women's hockey team diffused the pressure exerted by host England to hold them to a 1-1 draw in the opening game of the Women's Hockey World Cup at London's Lee Valley and Hockey Centre on Saturday. India will play their second Pool B match against Ireland.

India was able to establish their lead in the 25th minute of the game through Neha Goyal. Throughout the game, India survived constant domination of England who had numerous opportunities to score through penalty corners. The host country managed to earn a total of nine penalty corners but failed to convert any of then and even had a penalty stroke call reversed. Compared to them, India was not able to earn even a single penalty corner. However, India's defence crumbled in the 54th minute as Lily Owsley scored to split the points between the two teams.

The intensity of the game had reached it's peak during the last 15 minutes of the match. The equaliser in the fourth quarter was a great save for the host team. However, the chances of England scoring first were more obvious. India got the opportunity in the face of a video referral. India’s Sunita Lakra made a commendable save in the 34th minute of the game as England tried to convert their sixth penalty corner. Ultimately, the 54th minute goal by Lily Owsley saved the host team from facing defeat in the opening match.
