Elavenil Valarivan shot a 253 in the 10m air rifle trials final, surpassing the world record of 252.4, enroute to winning the gold medal in the senior women's category. She also clinched gold in the junior event while Mehuli Ghosh, who had won two golds earlier, had to settle for silver this time.

Indian youngsters continued their dominating display at the 18th KSS shooting championship on Tuesday. Teenager Valarivan, who won gold in ISSF Junior World Cup earlier this year, made her arrival on the senior stage in some style by surpassing world record score of 252.4 to clinch the first place in the 10m air rifle senior event. While Valarivan shot 253 and bettered the Chinese Ruozu Zhao’s record, the feat won't go down in the history books as ISSF, the world governing body for the sport, only considers tournaments held at a world or continental level for the records and rankings.

West Bengal's teen shooting sensation Mehuli Ghosh, who won two golds on Monday in the same event had to settle for silver with a score of 251.7 while Manini Kaushik from Rajasthan bagged the bronze with 230.9 in the senior category.

Valarivan was dominant in the Junior category as well as a score of 252.3 secured her a second gold medal in the event. Once again it was Ghosh who claimed the silver with 251.1 whereas Shreya Agarwal from Madhya Pradesh claimed a spot on the podium with a score of 229.7. In the youth category, Yana Rathore of Madhya Pradesh bagged gold with 249.6 while Himachal Pradesh's Zeena Khitta grabbed the second spot with 248.5. Haryana's Nischal Singh finished third with a score of 225.1.

The selection trail 5 was held simultaneously with the KSS Memorial Shooting Championship which saw Elavenil top the charts with a qualification score of 632.2 while Ghosh scored 629.7 and Kaushik took the third spot with 629.1.

These points will be considered while the Asian Games and World Championships selections take place.
