Teenager Udhayveer Sidhu bagged an individual gold in the men’s 25m air pistol event at the ongoing ISSF World Championships in Changwon, Korea. Udhayveer (587) along with his twin brother Vijayveer Sidhu (581) and Rajkanwar Singh Sandhu (568) won gold for India in the team event as well.

The current crop of young Indian shooters has shown great potential in the past few months, ever since their impressive display at the ISSF World Cup in Mexico earlier this year. They carried that form into the 2018 Gold Coast CWG and the Asian Games as well.

Now, 16-year old Udhayveer Sidhu has managed to add to the medal tally of the ongoing ISSF Junior World Championships by bagging an individual gold in the men’s 25m air pistol event in Changwon. In addition to that, Sidhu along with teammate and twin brother - Vijayveer Sidhu and compatriot, Rajkanwar Singh Sandhu clinched the team gold medal in the same event.

Udhayveer shot a total score of 587 (291 in precision and 296 in rapid) in the individual competition to ensure a gold medal finish ahead of American Henry Leverett (584) and Korean shooter - Lee Jaekyoon (582). His brother, Vijayveer finished fourth with a score of 581 while Rajkanwar finished at the 20th spot with a score of 568.

The Indian triplet’s combined score of 1736 fetched the team gold. They were followed by China, who recorded a total of 1730 points. The bronze medal was awarded to Korea, who ended with a final score of 1721. Despite finishing 20th, Rajkanwar improved from his precision score of 279 to add 289 in the rapid which gave India the gold in the team event.

India is currently fourth in the overall medals tally with 24 total medals, which includes nine gold, eight silver and seven bronze medals, making this their best performance in the International Shooting Sport Federation’s showpiece event. The country has managed to clinch two Olympic quota places from the first qualifying event for Tokyo 2020 Olympics.
