Universiade 2019 | I am never satisfied with silver, says Elavenil Valarivan

After finishing second in the women’s air rifle event at the Universiade, Elavenil Valarivan has said that she is never satisfied with silver and rued the fact that she missed out on the gold due to her silly mistakes. She also bagged a team bronze at the 30th edition of the University Games.

It was a great outing for the young Elavenil Valarivan in the women's air rifle event at the ongoing Summer University Games in Napoli, Italy as she won the silver medal and team bronze medal in women’s air rifle events. In the team event, she partnered with Aayushi Gupta and Nina Chandel to finish at the third position.

Although it is considered as a good shoe by the Tamil Nadu youngster, she rued missed opportunities to claim the gold medal in the individual event.

“I missed the gold with silly mistakes. I am never satisfied with silver. It was kind of chill and friendly atmosphere. I had known many of them from the previous match. So, it was really a good experience competing with the students around the world. I really feel great because I think I am the youngest in the Indian shooting team,” Valarivan told Sportstar.

Valarivan has already made a mark on the world stage in shooting with her consistency in the junior events. In her career, she has won three gold medals in Junior World Cups and a gold at the Asian Air Gun Championship. She also has a junior silver to her name in the World Championship. However, she was first into athletics before making a career in shooting and played many other sports as well.

“I was in athletics before shooting. I have played almost every game except cricket, football and volleyball. I was in my school teams for basketball, handball, kabaddi and shot put. My main focus was sprints. I have played State and was selected for nationals, but didn’t continue,” the Tamil Nadu shooter said.

Now with some great shows in shooting, Valarivan is looking ahead to put up a good show in the Junior World Cup and Masters event. “I am looking forward to doing well in the Junior World Cup in Suhl and then the Masters event in Delhi,” she concluded.
