India’s Asiad silver medalist Deepak Kumar failed to reach the final of men’s air rifle by 1.2 points as he could only score a decent 628.3 that eventually wasn’t enough to qualify. Gaayathri Nithyanandam, Sunidhi Chauhan, and Kajal Saini advanced into the final women’s rifle 3-position event.

India have been reasonably brilliant in the ongoing ISSF World Cup held in Munich, Germany, where they have won three gold medals, one Olympic quota, and also created world records over the first two days.

However, a downfall was bound to hit and it came in the form of Deepak’s performance on Tuesday. Deepak was one of India’s bigger hopes after he shot 630.1 in the World Championship in Korea last year and had only just missed the Olympic quota as the top four were awarded.

The event was won by 19-year-old Filip Nepejchal of the Czech Republic, who could only qualify from the eighth place with 629.5, as he finished ahead of Croatia’s Petar Gorsa and qualification round topper Yang Haoran (632.5) of China.

The Olympic quota places were sealed by Ukraine’s Oleh Tsarkov and Italy’s Marco Suppini, who finished fifth and sixth respectively.

In other events, India’s Gaayathri Nithyanandam (1173), Sunidhi Chauhan (1171) and Kajal Saini (1167) performed well to advance into the final round of women’s rifle 3-position event, which would take place on Wednesday.

The women’s air pistol and men’s rapid fire pistol are also scheduled for Wednesday, hence Indian eves would have a lot to target for apart from the women’s rifle 3-position event. India lead the medals table with three gold, followed by China with one gold, one silver and four bronze medals.
