Asian Indoor Games | Cyclists Alena Reji, Deborah Herold secure team sprint silver for India

Deborah Herold and Alena Reji have managed to secure the silver medal at the 5th Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games in Turkmenistan on Thursday, increasing India’s overall tally to 14. Meanwhile, Keduovilie Zumu won a bronze in men's Kazakh Kurasi - 90kg category of belt wrestling.

18-year-old Reji rode the first lap in 20.106 seconds, and 22-year-old Herold followed that feat by an impressive timing of 14.815 seconds and with an overall timing of 34.921 seconds, the duo finished behind Hong Kong to lay claim on the silver medal. 

Herold, who holds the national records in 200, 250 and 500m time trial events, won medals in Track Asia Cup held at New Delhi in 2015 and 2016. Reji, too, had won a silver medal in the junior section of Team Sprint event at the Asian championships New Delhi 2017 and a bronze in 500m time trial in the same competition.

India’s second medal on the day came from Keduovilie Zumu in the men’s 90kg Kazakh Kurasi event, in which he got the better of another Indian Akshay Shivaji Surve in the repechage bronze medal bout.

Now, India are currently at the ninth position in the medal standings, having already won 14 medals overall, that include five gold, four silver, five bronze medals.
