The Indian men’s handball team was defeated by Bahrain 32-25 in a Group D preliminary round encounter of the Asian games at Kopki indoor stadium, Jakarta on Wednesday. India had also lost to Chinese Taipei 18-28 in their opening game of the competition - certainly not a performance that they wanted.

Bahrain maintained the pressure from the very beginning on the Indians as they finished the first period with the scoreline reading 18-11 in their favour. The Indians failed to make a comeback in the second and ended up collecting only 14 points in the period, eventually falling short by seven points.

Deepak Ahlawat was the top scorer for India as he converted 9 out of 10 shots while Karamjeet Singh scored five out of seven times in the game. Adithya Nagraj and Harendra Singh both managed to score four each, but it was mostly down to other's lackadaisical performance that resulted in 12th-ranked Indian side going down to Bahrain.

Earlier, the handball team had to go through some controversies regarding participation at the Asian Games before getting the final clearance and now the mental blocks seem to take a toll on the team's performance.
