Esow Alban, who hails from the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, has become the first Indian cyclist to bag a medal at the Junior Track Cycling World Championships. Esow clinched the silver medal in men’s Keirin event on Day two of the World Championships that are currently ongoing in Aigle, Switzerland.

Esow completed the thrilling final race just 0.017 seconds behind the gold medalist from Czech Republic Jakub Stastny. India’s most promising and emerging cyclist Esow gave a tough fight to the Czech opponent in the race which ended up in a photo finish. Earlier in the Championships, he managed to top the 20m heats by clocking 10.851 seconds.

“I just wanted to stay at the front and avoid getting involved in any crashes. I believed I could win but I am still happy… well a little bit happy,” said Esow after winning silver.

Esow, who trains at Sports Authority of India (SAI)’s National Cycling Academy in Delhi, became World No.1 in junior category last month. He had also become the first Indian cyclist to win gold in Asian Junior Track Cycling Championships. He had bagged three gold medals in the 25th Junior Asian Track Cycling Championships in Malaysia which includes two individual medals in Keirin and Sprint and a team one with Mayur Pawar and James Singh.
