Tamil Nadu players S. Akshaya Sri and Rathika Seelan registered wins over second-seeded players in the girls under-15 and under-19 singles quarterfinals in the Sub-Junior/Junior National Championship here on Sunday. While Akshaya defeated Aasya Patel, Rathikha overcame Joshna Singh.

In the girls' under-15 category, Akshaya ousted her second-seeded opponent from Madhya Pradesh in a five-game thriller. Aasya claimed the first two games 13-11 and 11-6, but lost a tight third game 12-10. But from there on, she was no match for Akshaya, who blew her away in the following two games 11-1 and 11-5 to complete her victory.

Meanwhile, in the under-19 event, Rathika overpowered her category’s second-seeded player Joshna. Returning to action after being out of competitive squash for a year due to knee injury, Rathika defeated her Maharashtrian opponent in four games.

Elsewhere, in the girls' under-17 category, Abhishek Shannon (5/8 seed) upset 3/4 seed Tanishka Jain, while Megha Bhatia (3/4 seed) defeated Avani Nagar in 3 games to complete a day of upsets in Chennai. The second game scoreline, which read 25-23, in the Megha-Avani clash, set a new national record for the longest game played in girls under-17 category.
