Ace paddler Achanta Sharath Kamal has been voted the Indian Oil Corporation Sportsperson of the Year out of five nominees at the annual Sports Conclave of Indian Oil on Monday. Cheteshwar Pujara, B Adhiban, Simranjeet Singh and Manika Batra were the other four nominees for the award.

Over 60 elite sportspersons employed with the Indian Oil chose Achanta Sharath Kamal as the Sportsperson of the Year for his contribution in Indian table tennis. The ace paddler is currently preparing for the Commonwealth Championships and was delighted with the announcement at the Indian Oil Annual Sports Conclave on Monday.

“It is a great honour to be chosen ahead of such achievers. After my parents, Indian Oil has played a major role in my career. In 2003, they took me when I was not even a National champion. Since then, they have taken care of all my needs and it is an absolute privilege to be part of the Indian Oil family,” the senior paddler was quoted as saying by Sportstar.

Most of the active sportspersons employed by the oil major attended the event. The list includes some famous names like Rohan Bopanna, Cheteshwar Pujara, Sharath, Prithvi Shaw, Simranjeet Singh, badminton coach P. Gopi Chand, table tennis coach Soumyadeep Roy and several members of the National hockey team.

Manika Batra, who will lead India’s challenge at the Commonwealth Championships along with Sharath, was not able to attend the function along with Indian batsman Rohit Sharma who struck five centuries in the recently-concluded Cricket World Cup.
