Commonwealth Table Tennis | Women’s team win gold by commanding 3-0 win over England; men's team repeat feat

The Indian women’s table tennis team made their way to the gold medal as they thoroughly outplayed England by a score of 3-0 in the final at the Commonwealth Table Tennis Championship in Cuttack. Meanwhile, the men’s team also won gold by beating England 3-2 in the men’s category.

Both the Indian teams defeated England in contrasting finals as the repeated last year’s team championship double-gold medal feat at Commonwealth Games by lifting trophies on the third day of the 21st Commonwealth Table Tennis Championship at the Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor Stadium in Cuttack. 

While the women easily walked over England with a 3-0 win in a one-sided contest to win a historic first gold for India in the tournament’s 48-year history. Meanwhile, Sharath Kamal-led men’s team produced an inspiring comeback to edge past England 3-2 and successfully defend their title.

World No. 32 Sharath Kamal suffered a shock defeat to England’s promising youngster Tom Jarvis, ranked 189. G. Sathiyan led 2-0 against England’s premier paddler Sam Walker but suffered a defeat as England doubled the lead. Harmeet Desai fought hard to overcome England’s David McBeath as an aggressive Sathiyan and a composed Sharath then saw India home by beating Jarvis and Walker to help India win its third team championship.
