G Sathiyan had to settle only for a bronze medal at the ongoing the ITTF Challenge Plus Oman Open as he lost the semi-final battle against Mattias Flack. In the under-21 women’s category, India’s Archana Kamath lost to Satsuki Odo in the final match to finish with a silver medal at the event.

In the men’s singles semi-final at the Oman Open, Sathiyan was defeated 8-11, 11-7, 9-11, 11-9, 9-11, 11-9, 10-12 by Flack from Sweden and had to remain satisfied with only a bronze medal. The match went to a decider and it was a closely-contested one in the end. The Indian bowed out in the seventh game which ended with 10-12 points in favour of Flack.

Earlier in the tournament, Sathiyan had defeated France’s Emmanuel Lebesson in the quarterfinals 4-1 (11-9, 11-7, 11-9, 6-11, 12-10).

Earlier in women’s singles, Madhurika Patkar and Riti Shankar were knocked out of the event from their respective first-round matches in the main draw. Achanta Sharath Kamal and Sathiyan had also lost the quarter-final tie of men’s doubles against Russia’s Denis Ivonin and Vladimir Sidorenko.

Sathiyan also combined in the mixed doubles with Kamath but they bowled out of the event in the first round while the pair of Patkar and Harmeet Desai was knocked out in the quarters.

In the women’s under 21 category, Kamath showcased great composure till the final but eventually lost to Japan’s top seed Odo by 7-11, 8-11, 6-11 points. She had to settle with a silver medal in her first competition after winning the national title earlier this year.

“She (Satsuki) was really good, especially on her backhand. But I think I had a good outing here at Muscat,” Kamath told after her match, reported PTI.
