Paes-Begemann reach Winston-Salem Open final while Mirza-Niculescu enter Connecticut Open final

Leander Paes and Andre Begemann booked their place in the final of the Winston-Salem Open after beating Robert Lindstedt and Aisam-ul Haq Qureshi 1-6, 7-6, 10-4 in a thrilling encounter. Sania Mirza and her new partner Monica Niculescu also reached the final of the Connecticut Open.

After splitting up with Martina Hingis two weeks back, Sania Mirza became the lone holder of the World No.1 spot in women’s doubles on Sunday after winning the Cincinnati Open along with her partner Barbora Strycova. Sania and Strycova had defeated Hingis and Coco Vandeweghe 7-5, 6-4 to win the title.

Continuing her preparations for the upcoming US Open, Sania joined hands with Monica Niculescu of Romania for the Connecticut Open tennis tournament in New Haven, USA. The second seeds started the tournament with an easy 6-0, 6-3 win over the American wildcard team of Louisa Chirico and Alison Riske. Yesterday, they took on Darija Jurak of Croatia and Anastasia Rodionova of Australia in the quarters, and defeated them 6-1, 6-4 to advance to the semis. In the semis, Mirza and her partner faced the Serbian pair of Andreja Klepac and Katarina Srebotnik,

The Indo-Romanian pair started the match poorly and lost the first set 2-6, where they were broken twice by their opponents. However, they improved drastically in the second set, which saw a total of five break of serves between the two teams. But, it was Mirza and Niculescu who came out on the top, winning the set 6-3. This led the match to a super tie-break, which Mirza and her partner won 10-8 to book their place in the final, where they will face the unseeded pair of Kateryna Bondarenko and Chuang Chia-jung.

In Winston-Salem Open, India’s Leander Paes and his German partner Andre Begemann had reached the last four after defeating Łukasz Kubot and Nenad Zimonjić 6-4, 6-4. In the semis, the Indo-German pair faced third seeds Robert Lindstedt and Aisam-Ul-Haq Qureshi, and it ended up being a thrilling encounter.

The No.3 seeds dominated in the opening set and won it 6-1 as Paes and Begemann managed to get in just 33% of their first serves in. However, the Indo-German pair improved their serving drastically in the second set and even saved four break points, before eventually winning the set 7-6 in a tiebreaker. After gaining the momentum, Paes and Begemann ran away with the super tie-break 10-4 to book their place in the final, where they will face the unseeded pair of Guillermo García-López and Henri Kontinen.
