Novak Djokovic eyes quick return to No 1

Novak Djokovic has declared his intention to reclaim the world No 1 ranking that he lost to Andy Murray earlier this month at the season-ending ATP World Tour finals starting in London on Sunday.

"I'm here in London to crown this year with the best possible result. I've had an amazing last four years at the O2 Arena," the Serbian ace told reporters.

Djokovic has been struggling to hit top form since completing a career slam at the French Open that resulted in the end of his 122-week reign at the top of world rankings.

"My high standard of results has taken its toll a bit. I didn't get to recover fast after the French Open to compete at the highest level,” he said.

"I had to dig deep and take some time to reflect because it was an incredible achievement. It took a bit of time to get back on track but all in all it was a very good year.

"I've had a good couple of months. It's not been up to the standards of the 12 to 15 months before that but in sport you can't always expect to win.”

The Serb broke down in tears after the shock defeat to Argentine Juan Martin del Potro at the Olympics, but denied struggling with emotional turmoil.

"What makes you say that? I'm my normal self every day. I was talking about certain ups and downs that everybody has.

"You do have days when you are feeling maybe less determined to play, and some days you feel more, but as long as the majority of the days you feel positive then things are going well.”

Murray also expects Djokovic to come back strongly. "There's no reason to think he won't have a really good tournament,” the Scot told BBC website.

"Before then he'd been playing great, so for him not play his best tennis for a couple of months, I'm sure it's not too much to worry about. I'd imagine shortly he'll be back to playing his best tennis."

Djokovic will open against Austrian Dominic Thiem on Sunday, while Murray will lock horns with Croat Marin Cilic on Monday.
