Yuki Bhambri has stunned defending champion Gael Monfils in the Citi Open Round of 32 as he continues his brilliant progress with a hard fought 6-3, 4-6, 7-5 win. Meanwhile, Rohan Bopanna and American partner Donald Young reach quarter finals with straight sets win over the wild card entrants.

It remained a good day for Indian tennis at the Citi Open as both Yuki Bhambri and Rohan Bopanna secured their places in the round of 16 and round of 8 respectively.

19-year-old Bhambri surprised the sixth-seeded French star by dominating the fan favourite right from the first set. The 200-ranked player was riding high on confidence following his two back-to-back wins in the qualifiers and the first round.

While the world number 22 did make a comeback in the second round, Bhambri narrowly edged him out in the third. The boy from Delhi now faces Argentine Guido Pella next in the pre-quarter final who had ousted compatriot Ramkumar Ramanathan last week in the second round.

In the men’s doubles, Bopanna had it very comfortable against the Canada-Pakistan pair of Daniel Nestor and Aisam-ul-Haq Qureshi. With his American partner Young, Bopanna progressed to the next round with an easy 6-2, 6-3 win.

They face a tough challenge ahead in the form of Bryan brothers now. The American pair of Bob Bryan and Mike Bryan overcame fellow compatriots Nicholas Monroe and Jack Stock with easy straight set wins in the last round.
