Former world number one Novak Djokovic may end the year without a Grand slam for the first time in seven years as he might have to withdraw from the US Open due to his elbow injury. Djokovic was forced to retire from his Wimbledon quarterfinal match against Tomas Berdych for the same injury.

The 12-time Grand slam champion needed treatment on his elbow at the end of the first set during his quarter-final match at Wimbledon. Clearly dejected by the injury, the Serb had said that he would consider undergoing surgery if needed to fix it for the long term. And now, in all likelihood, he will have to give the US Open a miss, as reported by the Tennis Federation of Serbia’s doctor.

The doctor, Zdeslav Milinkovic, told Serbian newspaper Sportski Zurnal that Djokovic has a bone bruise from “excessive play” that requires between a month-and-a-half to three months of rest.

"He has a bruised bone due to excessive playing," the newspaper quoted Milinkovic as saying.

“The most important thing is that Novak is at the moment calm and recovering successfully. The minimum will be paused for six weeks, and it is possible that the recovery will last for 12 weeks,” he added.

Milinkovic also stated that Djokovic will clear the air about his participation in the US Open on Wednesday.

“Djokovic will announce on Wednesday a plan for the next period. He goes to therapy and can train, but without a racquet. Novak is in Toronto undergoing some further tests with specialists."

The last Grand slam event of the year, US Open starts on August 28. If Djokovic, whose ranking has slipped to No.4, is ruled out of the tournament, his ranking will slip further. Meanwhile, world No 1 Andy Murray expects to be fit to resume soon after having treatment on his hips.
