The winners of the Asian Games men’s and women’s singles tennis stars will earn direct entry into the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, the ITF announced yesterday. The ITF has also introduced six continental qualification places, approved by the IOC Executive Board, as part of the race to Tokyo 2020.

The upcoming Tokyo Olympics Tennis will have five disciplines to compete for - men’s singles and doubles, women’s singles and doubles, and mixed doubles. Each section of the singles draw will comprise of 64 players, with the provision being a maximum of four players participating from one nation. While 56 direct acceptances will be taken from the previous Games, eight ITF places will be determined from the upcoming continental events.

However, the players, who will qualify for the mega event in 2020, should be ranked within the top 300 on the singles rankings of June 8, 2020, and most importantly, the quota for any nation should not be filled by four direct acceptances.

“The introduction of Continental Qualification places is a significant and positive change that we believe will help strengthen participation in these important regional games, and will provide opportunities for additional nations to contest the Olympic Tennis Event,” ITF president David Haggerty said, reported Scroll.

“This initiative forms part of our commitment under the ITF 2024 strategy to secure mutually beneficial partnerships, and we look forward to working with our Regional Associations to ensure successful implementation.”

While the 2019 Pan American Games in Lima will be the qualification route for the North and South American continent, the 2019 African Games in Luksaka, Zambia, will determine the winners for the African continent.
