Despite being a big fan of the Serbian national football team, Novak Djokovic has stated that he would gladly miss the FIFA World Cup finals even if Serbia makes an appearance in it for success in Wimbledon. Serbia took off their World Cup campaign with a 1-0 win over Costa Rica in Russia on Sunday.

Djokovic had celebrated with much vigour after Serbia won with Aleksandar Kolarov’s brilliant free-kick. He was watching the match from a raucous player’s lounge at Queen's Club in West London where he is training for the Wimbledon warm up event. He was ecstatic to watch his friend Kolarov deliver the winning free-kick.

However, the World Cup finals scheduled in Moscow will start just hours after the Wimbledon men's final begin at the All England Club on July 15. When informed of this clash, Djokovic states that even if Serbia makes a surprising appearance in the finals, he would prefer the Wimbledon title match any day over attending FIFA World Cup finals.

“Really? I didn't Know that. Wow! From your mouth to gods ears as they say, hopefully that can happen. I've been fortunate to win Wimbledon three times and play well there. If that happens I would obviously be very happy to miss the World Cup final,” Djokovic told the reporters.

Rest assured, he is relishing Serbia's recent victory and he hopes that the team will enter the knockout stages in Russia.

“We didn't qualify for last World Cup and the last two Euros, so we didn't get a chance to enjoy these matches for a long time,” Djokovic said.

“Serbia have been quite successful in basketball over the years, but football is the most popular sport in the world and in our country as well. Everyone would love to see the national team go far,” he added.
