Women's World number one Simona Halep has pulled herself out of next week’s Wimbledon warm-up at Eastbourne after enduring an Achilles problem during the latter stages of the French Open. Halep beat Sloane Stephens through a three-set victory in the French Open final recently to lift the silverware.

Top-ranked Simona Halep of Romania fought against all odds to secure her 17th career title at the recently concluded French Open when she beat Sloane Stephens in the final. Halep endured a rough start to the final when she trailed by a set and break before she turned things around in her favour.

Halep, who had lost her previous three grand-slam finals, sealed the title with a three-set final victory over Stephens at Roland Garros. However, the 26-year old player revealed that she would not be part of the upcoming Wimbledon warm-up at Eastbourne after having failed to recover from an Achilles problem she suffered towards the latter stages of the French Open.

“I’m very sorry to announce that I’m withdrawing from next week’s Nature Valley International. I was experiencing Achilles tendon pain and inflammation during the French Open and it has yet to fully recover.

“I’ve been advised by my doctors that it needs more rest while continuing treatment. I loved competing at Eastbourne last year and hope to see you at this wonderful event next year,” Halep Tweeted.

But the Romanian world number one revealed that she will go into Wimbledon, which will begin on July 2, without a competitive match on grass. Halep’s withdrawal leaves four top-10 players in the Eastbourne event, which included last year’s champion Karolina Pliskova and runner-up Caroline Wozniacki along with Jelena Ostapenko and world number eight Petra Kvitova as well.
