Indian singles tennis ace Prajnesh Gunneswaran continued his winning run at the Liuzhou Challenger tournament in China winning 6-4, 6-4 against Egypt’s Mohammad Safwat reaching the quarters. In the other singles games, Ramkumar Ramanathan and Sumit Nagal both lost their respective games.

Gunneswaran had started the tournament with a strong 6-4 7-5 win over France’s Johan Tatlot in the USD 50,000 hard court event. Against Safawat, Gunneswaran was the clear favourite as he had already beaten Swafwat thrice this season. And the outcome wasn’t surprising either as the World No. 146 finished the match in one hour fifteen minutes.

India’s other hopes from the tournament were Ramanathan and Nagal, who both had to go out early in the tournament. Ramanathan started the campaign in poor form struggling since his impressive display at the Hall of Fame Open, where he had reached the final for the first time in an ATP250 event. And it continued that way as he lost in the opening round 6-7(3) 3-6 to Spain’s Alejandro Davidovich Fokina.

Nagal was the other qualifier who lost 2-6 3-6 to Japanese eighth seed Tatsuma Ito in the first round itself  In the doubles category, the men’s doubles pairing of Arjun Kadhe and Yaraslav Shyla qualified for the quarterfinals after a straightforward 6-4, 6-3 win over Liam Broady and Duckhee Lee.
