Indian wrestlers Babita Kumari and Ravinder Khatri qualified for the Rio Olympics on Wednesday, increasing India’s quota places to eight, after their rivals failed dope tests. Babita Kumari wrestles in the women’s 53kg freestyle, while Khatri will be seen in the Greco-Roman men’s 85kg category.

Babita got a shot at the Olympics after Mongolian wrestler Sumiya Erdenechimeg failed a dope test at the Asian qualifiers in the women’s 53kg category. Khatri, on the other hand, confirmed his spot in the quadrennial event after Kenzheev Zhanarbek of Kyrgyzstan tested positive at the Asian qualifiers in the Greco-Roman men’s 85kg category.

With Babita and Khatri qualifying for the Olympics, India increased its quota places to eight at the event, a historic feat. Last week, Vinesh Phogat and Sakshi Malik had qualified for the Olympics at the second World Olympic Qualifying tournament to further strengthen the Indian wrestling contingent.
