Sumit bags silver as India finish with 10 medals in Asian wrestling

India ended their successful campaign at the Asian Wrestling Championship in New Delhi on Sunday on a high as Sumit Kumar bagged a silver medal in the men's 125kg freestyle category. The hosts finished with 10 medals - a lone gold by Bajrang Punia, five silver and four bronze medals.

India's performance was one medal more that their nine-medal haul in the previous edition held in Bangkok.

Sumit went down 2-6 to Iranian grappler Yadollah Mohammadkazem Mohebi in the final. The Indian wrestler conceded an early point but bounced back by scoring two consecutively. However, Mohebi overpowered Sumit to earn two points to finish the opening round 5-2. 

In the second half, the Iranian took one more point and then denied Sumit any opportunity to score.

Earlier, Sumit beat Japnese Taiki Yamamoto 6-3 and Farkhod Anakulov of Tajikistan 7-2 in the quarterfinals and semifinals respectively.  

Two other Indian grapplers in action on the day lost in the quarterfinals - Harphool in men's 61kg category went down to Rei Higuchi of Japan and Vinod Kumar Omprakash bowed out to Japanese Momojiro Nakamura in men's 70kg.
